REVIEW
I was excited to hear MIDIssonance
released a new Omnisphere soundset library called Kubo. It contains 128
cinematic patches using the Omnisphere 2.6 update. MIDIssonance collaborated
with composer David Housden a BAFTA and Ivor Novello nominated composer for his
video game score Q.U.B.E.
2. The influences used in this soundset were inspired by Solar Fields
'Mirror's Edge' video game score, Icelandic avant-rock band Sigur Rós,
ambient/post-rock band Hammock, and the musical work of Cliff Martinez in the
films Solaris and Drive. Having played Mirror's Edge and seeing both of those
films, I can hear the influences are evident. This soundset is edgy and contains plenty of
originality. Kubo has a nice selection of organic quality and contains a wide
range of interesting arps. The use of the modulation wheel is programmed with detail
and if you don't move the mod-wheel on every patch you'll miss out on subtle to
intensive variations.
Out of all 128 patches, I didn't find any that were unusable. With that said, I only found one preset that took advantage of the four layers in Omnisphere called 'Only Church' in the Textures folder. There were plenty of presets that use 3 layers, but I would have liked to have seen a few more using all four layers. The other thing I would have liked to have seen were some multis, even though it's more fulfilling creating my own. However, the price is right for 128 patches that are meticulously designed by MIDIssonance.
The Pads+Strings section contains some beautiful lush ambient sounds that really capture the essence of the library, but the textures have incredible versatility that had me entranced. I also like the Guitars in this library. Even though there are only 2 listed in the Guitars section, there are multiple guitar pads in the Pads+Strings category. My favorite Guitar pads are 'Delikat', Everdream, Subsurface Ocean, Next Departure, and Vagary.
There is a special kind of artistry when it comes to the sound design of MIDIssonance. It's a near perfect soundset that I would recommend to anyone looking to expand their Omnisphere library with something fresh and unique. Any composer or electronic musician will find that these sounds fit perfectly in film, game audio, or ambient music. Omnisphere Kubo offers a memorable sonic canvas to begin exploring and gets a
