A Brief History Of The Musical Floppy Drive

While the true origin of floppy drive music is uncertain, we do know that one of the first videos on YouTube of a “singing” floppy drive was posted on September 16th, 2007. The video features a Commodore 64 floppy playing “Daisy Bell” from a pre-programmed midi sequence.
In June 2008, a video of a floppy disk playing the Imperial March from “Star Wars” was featured on Hack A Day, Today & Tomorrow, Think Artificial, Buzzfeed and Make Magazine. The following year, artist Mike Kohn launched a section on his personal site to exhibit his floppy drive music work, featuring Bach’s Invention 13.
Since then, hundreds of different videos and tutorials have been posted all over the internet showing their floppy drive music creations and sharing coding tutorials to create your own playable floppy drive.

DESIGN
Sampleso has custom built and programmed the circuit that converts MIDI information from a keyboard controller to the necessary information for the floppy drive to play a musical note. This circuit was based on an Arduino Uno and was coded specifically for this project.
The drive was carefully sampled using state of the art equipment, using acoustic techniques to give the instrument a bigger, fuller sound.
After which Sampleso implemented the samples onto their signature custom Kontakt engine, and added some exclusive features to compliment the floppy drive sound, resulting in a one of a kind instrument that will definitely keep your creativity flowing.
All the controls in the main interface can be assigned a MIDI CC with a simple right-click.

  Lush Atmosphere is a really bargain priced sample library for Kontakt that actually packs a lot of lush atmospheric punch. I really had a lot of fun with this instrument and because the GUI was laid out so simple, you can alter your sound very quickly.From the default page you can control filter cutoff, filter resonance, volume envelope, level, pan, reverb and chorus.
If you are looking for a library that can used to score a great ambient underscore, then this would be great addition to your Kontakt palette. The amazing thing is, this library only retails for $15. I really couldn't believe the sound was such high quality. This is the first time exploring a Genera Studios library but it won't be the last. Genera Studios is founded by musician and sound designer Andrew Southworth and has created an array of other products.
 I did a demo of most of the presets below, if you would like to hear how rich this library really is. Lush Atmosphere is exactly what the name says. I have some expensive libraries that don't even sound this good out of the box. Believe it or not this library is a steal and is full of atmospheric euphoria that delivers on every level. For a Kontakt library that won't break the bank and quality that sounds this good, earns a 5 out of 5 Stars!

REVIEW

A while ago I reviewed Omnisphere Ylem II created by Gahrn Audio, a sound design company owned and operated by composer, producer, and sound designer Claus Gahrn. Just like Ylem II it has a collection of 50 dark, atmospheric textures for Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2 created for ambient, experimental film and game music.  The fact that I was going backwards and reviewing a part one soundset after reviewing the second soundset in the Ylem series was a little worrisome. Certainly part 2 had to be better right? Maybe and maybe not. Ylem contains 2 categories 'textures playable' and 'textures soundscapes' just like it's brother Ylem II.
The textures in Ylem are powerful, dripping with dark emotions. I encourage everyone to put a pair of headphones on and listen to the textures in the video patch walk-through I created below. If you own Ylem II, you need the original Ylem, I believe these two soundsets work in conjunction with each other as a perfect pair. 

The textures in Omnisphere Ylem are ominous, haunting, and mysterious. If you are scoring a horror, sci-fi, or suspenseful film, this would make an essential addition to your composing underscore arsenal. Gahrn Audio has created Ylem with a modern complexity of atmospheric utopia. Ylem also contains some demo patches you can try before you buy it but at this price point of €14.00 (incl. VAT) I would say it isn't necessary. You can listen to all the patches in the video below and this should convince anyone this soundset is worth its weight in sound design gold. So, the bottom line is GarhnAudio's Ylem is out of this word and
deserves a spot in anyone’s Omnisphere 2 third party library collection and earns a 5 out of 5 stars!
